We all read different books. Then we started writing down things that happened in the book on a piece of paper. Then we put three good things that happened in the book and three bad things that happened. We needed 3 good things and 2 bad things to include on the board game. Then we had to do a little practice game on a rough draft. We wrote on spaces whether you had to move forward or go back spaces. On our final copy, we colored them, glued them in file folders and wrote letters. Then we laminated them and got to play them. We donated them to Inner City Youth Opportunities, where children go after school for tutoring and other programs. It was fun because we got to help other people.

Ms. Young's class read a book called Frindle. In the book, there is a crazy boy named Nick Allen who invents a new word. The new word is Frindle, which is a replacement to a pen. When he invents the new word his teacher gets really mad and they started a battle: Nick vs. Mrs. Granger. The word starts spreading all over the country and even goes to different countries! Nick was getting richer and richer with all the money he was making too. You won't believe how the ending is! If you want to find out, you should read the book! Questions: Have you ever read a crazy story like this? Would you ever want to invent a new word? What would it be? What would it mean? We tried backchanneling this week! Backchanneling is having a conversation simultaneously (at the same time) as an activity, read aloud, or video to help us learn or ask questions. While Ms. Young read Dancing in the Wings out loud, we all had a conversation on www.todaysmeet.com. We typed what we noticed about the main character, Sassy. We observed what she looked like on the different pages, what she said, thought, felt and did. Based on those observations, we labeled her with different character traits. We were able to record our thoughts as we had them and have a discussion once the book was over about our backchannel! Below is a snippet of our conversation.
What did you think of this backchanneling activity? Our book reviews are finally done! It took awhile, but we have all recorded ourselves reading our book reviews on the VoiceThread below. We picked a book to review, talked about the main events and told our favorite parts. We made sure not to tell you the endings of the books! The coolest part about VoiceThread is that it lets others make comments on the images too! So please watch our videos and leave a comment on one! Comments can be typed, voice-recorded, or videotaped! You can leave a compliment or ask a question for more information. You do not have to watch all 22 book reviews. Click on the bottom right of the screen where there is a grid of pictures, it will let you pick which one you want to watch. We had so much fun with this project! Every student received a book to read last week. After reading, they made a list of 5 or more events that happened in the story and listed them in order. Then they decided if the events were "good" or "bad" to figure out if it would be a MOVE AHEAD space or LOSE A TURN space. Once the planning was done, we created board games to go with each book! We are donating the books and board games to a local children's charity, Inner City Youth Opportunities (ICYO). We thought this was a great way to give back to children who don't have books to read and games to play each day.
What have you done to help others in need? What is your favorite book or board game? This week we learned about Schema. We brainstormed what we thought Schema was and what we remembered about Schema from First Grade. Check out the Lino we created online! The students worked with partners to post their thoughts on www.linoit.com. We loved using this tool, and we will use it more in the future! You can see the full lino post by going to the "Lino Posts" page on our website. What do you think schema is? Do you use schema when you read a book? Did you learn about schema when you were in school? Our friend, AC was sick and asked us through the blog where our favorite place to read was. We decided to create a google survey and graph our results. Check out where our favorite places to read are!
I couldn't resist a couple final blog posts! We presented our Fable Skits today, and they were so much fun! Here are a few pics of the groups from this morning. This holiday season, our class, along with Mrs. Lance's class, worked on a service project together. We ordered books from Scholastic using points we earned from previous book orders. Each student was given a book to read. After reading the book, they created board games about the book, including main events and illustrations from the story. We laminated these board games, along with cover letters about the book and their favorite parts. Then we donated the books and games to The Healing Center in Cincinnati for children to use when they are there! The activity was a huge success, and the students were so proud of their work!
We've been talking about families and why our families are special to us and make us feel secure. After reading The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie Flournoy, we brainstormed things that are special or unique about our individual families and made quilts illustrating this. We brought all our individual quilts together as patches for a giant class quilt. :) We had so much fun with this project! Have a Happy Thanksgiving with your families!!
