We went on a treasure hunt with Mrs. Lance's clues! Mrs. Lance's Class made a treasure hunt for us. There were 7 groups. They gave us directions to follow to find a treasure they hid. We had to follow the steps to get to the treasure. The treasures were inside a ziploc bag, and the treasures were stickers. Some people didn't find their treasures. One group found another group's treasure by accident! Then we wrote clues for Mrs. Lance's class to follow. Only one of their groups didn't find their treasure! We learned a lot about how to follow directions to find things, such as "go east." We learned that it was important to follow the directions exactly, hold the map the right way, and write more details in our directions. We also learned that we learn from our mistakes!

In our class, we are learning about maps. So far we've learned about the compass rose, map keys, and symbols. We made maps of our class. We worked in groups. All of us have already completed our maps. We had a lot of fun. The supplies we needed were: scissors, colored paper, white paper, crayons, markers, pencils, construction paper and a really BIG piece of posterboard. When we were done, we got our picture taken. Each group got a checklist. Every map was hung up on the windows for everyone to see and admire. It was a great lesson. I hope we do it again. Have you ever made a map? What was the map? When would you want to use a map? Last Friday was Jersey Day in our class! We did lots of number activities with the numbers on our shirts. First, we put ourselves in order from smallest to greatest SILENTLY. Our highest number was 220. Our lowest number was 1. We sorted ourselves into odd and even numbers. To find out if a number is odd or even, take that number of objects and make pairs. If there are no leftovers, the number is even. If there is one leftover, the number is odd. Just in case you have a number over 10, all you have to do is look at the last number to tell if it's odd or even. We also found our spots on the number line. After that, we made number sentences with the numbers on our shirts. We used the number 4 in a lot of our number sentences! We made addition number sentences and subtraction number sentences. We even used more than 3 numbers to make a number sentence. We were excited to make this number sentence: 78+10+12=100. We were impressed that we could make a number sentence with a big number like 220. We were proud of ourselves! 100+78+32+10=220 Questions for our readers:
Do you have a favorite or lucky number? Do you like working with numbers and solving math problems? Can you think of another number sentence using our jersey numbers? September 11, 2013 was Patriot's Day. These are pictures of our school's ceremony that we had on Wednesday. Patriot's Day recognizes the people who protect us and keep us safe like military, police officers and firefighters, as well as all the people in the United States who work together to make our country a free and wonderful place to live. At our ceremony, we raised the flag on the flag pole, said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang many patriotic songs. The songs we sang were The National Anthem, You're a Grand Old Flag, My Country Tis of Thee, and O'Beautiful for Spacious Skies. All the students in the school, the teachers, and many parents came to the ceremony. Questions for our Readers: What did you do for Patriot's Day? Have you ever been to a ceremony? Which patriotic song is your favorite? Last week we harvested all our vegetables from our school garden! The Second Graders grew corn, lima beans, carrots, tomatoes, and onions. Other classes had different vegetables including lettuce, peppers, beans, zucchini and flowers. We used these vegetables to make soup and salad for a special Soup and Salad night at school! We raised money at the Soup and Salad night to give to students in Sierra Leone, Africa to buy new computers for their school. We raised $1,900, which is enough to buy 8 computers for their school! We felt good about doing this because we know we are helping them. We also planted lettuce and radishes this week, to grow for a Farmer's Market in the fall. We can raise more money for the students in Sierra Leone then! Questions for our Readers: (Remember, first names only and no personal information like your last name, address, phone number, or future plans!)
Do you like vegetables? Which one is your favorite? Have you ever helped someone, and how did you feel doing it? Have you ever raised money in a fundraiser? What did you do to raise money? |
