We did lots of fun things in Science this week! Here are some fun things we did. First we experimented with syringes and tubes. We did Air Wrestling, where we connected two syringes with a tube and pushed the plungers back and forth. When we pushed the plunger into the syringe, it pushed the air out. When it was connected to another syringe, it pushed its plunger out! The reason this happened is because the air got compressed and wanted to spread out. We also tried pulling both plungers out all the way, and then pushing one in hard and fast to make the other pop off! When we had a tube connected to one syringe, we crimped the end of the tube so no air could escape. When we pushed on the plunger, we could not get it to go all the way into the syringe! That is because air was taking up space and could not move to get out of the way. We also made parachutes this week! We used 4 strings, a napkin, tape, and a paperclip. We taped one string on each corner of the napkin, and we tied the strings together on a paperclip. We threw the parachutes in the air, and they fell slowly down to the ground. The parachute fell slowly because air was pushing against it and slowing it down. That is called air resistance. Those are some things we did in Science this week!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Holliday's Class
Questions:
1. Next week we are bringing in toys that use air in some way to work. What is a toy that uses air to work?
2. Our parachutes were very delicate and many fell apart with several uses. What material could we use next time to make a more durable parachute?
