Book Recommendations and Read Aloud

3/18/2020

Dear Readers,

I know you all have been reading a TON this week while you've been home, right? ;)  I thought it would be a great idea to share some of the books you've read and loved in case one of your classmates is looking for a great, new book to read. I will start by sharing a little more about our new read aloud, Masterpiece, by Elise Broach. Check out my book recommendation below!

Do you love books that have animals as the main character?  Do you love a good mystery?  If you do, you should definitely listen in as I read Masterpiece! If you've started listening already, you know this book is about James Pompaday, an 11 year-old boy, and Marvin, a beetle who lives in the Pompaday house.  James gets a pen and ink set for his birthday, and Marvin tries it out, creating a very detailed miniature drawing.  James finds it,  and his mother sees it, thinking James drew it!  Everyone gives James credit for the drawing, and he gets lots of attention for it.  It leads him to an art museum, where he gets caught up in an art heist (that's another word for robbery)! James has a plan to get an original famous drawing back--but he can't do it without Marvin's help!  This is a fast-paced mystery that will leave you on the edge of your seat!  See if you can solve it along with me!

I hope you will follow along as I read this book each day (check out the photos of some of your classmates listening in!), but I also hope you will share some of the books you love right now!  You can share favorite books that you've read in the past as well as books you are currently reading!   I can't wait to get some new books to add to my reading list!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Holliday

Questions:

1.  What books have you read and loved?  What is the book about? (Don't give away the ending!) Why did you like it?  Who would also like reading this book?

2.  What do you think of our new read aloud so far?  What are your predictions about future events in the story? Is anyone else in your family listening to the story too?

Science Experiments and Limericks

3/18/2020

Dear Readers,
Today's Science activity asked you to try some different gravity experiments!  I would love to hear what experiments you did and how they worked.  If you have pictures, you can have your parents email the pictures to me, and I will add them to this blog post!  I can't wait to hear what you tested and learned about Gravity!

For reading, you read 3 limericks and wrote your own!  Share your limerick in the comments!  Here are two I wrote today:

There once was a teacher named Jen,
She loved to put paper to pen.
To think of a rhyme,
She just gave it time,
The result would always get a ten!

There once was a boy named Wy,
He wanted to learn how to fly.
He climbed to the top,
Mom said, "Don't jump-stop!"
So he sat down and started to cry.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Holliday

Questions:

1.  Question: What was your experiment called? What are you testing?

2.  Hypothesis: What did you THINK would happen?  What was your hypothesis?

3. Procedure: How did you set it up? What do you do to test it?

4.  Results: What actually happened in your experiment?  What was the result?

5.  Conclusion: Why do you think you got the results you did?

Remote Learning Daily Schedules

3/15/2020

Dear Second Graders,

Today is the first day of our Remote Learning! I don't know about you, but I already miss our schedule that we follow each day. I was thinking that I need to make a schedule for my family to follow, so that we make sure we take time to do lots of different things. I know some of you are already doing it--check out the picture below!! What a great idea! If you are interested in following our normal school routine, here is our typical Monday schedule:

8:55-9:05 Morning Meeting
9:05-10:05 Reading Workshop
10:05-10:40 Music
10:45-11:20 Spanish
11:20-11:30 Working Snack
11:30-12:15 Writer's Workshop
12:15-12:55 Lunch and Recess
1:00-1:20 Read Aloud
1:20-2:30 Math
2:30-3:15 Science/Social Studies
3:15-3:30 Pack Up

Maybe you want to stick to a schedule just like this. Maybe you'd prefer one that splits specials up, like our Tuesday Schedule. Don't forget to add in some extra recesses, exercise, GoNoodle time, and maybe even some screen time (t.v. show, movie, SumDog, Moby Max, Raz Kids, Spelling City, Brain Pop Jr., GoNoodle, commenting on our blog, etc)! You get to choose if you want to do one or two specials every day, or a little of each special every day. Maybe you do all the "school stuff" in the morning, or maybe you spread it out over the day. Make a schedule that works for you and your family. I can't wait to get some good ideas from you, and I will share mine too!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Holliday

Questions:

1. Share your schedule that you want to follow!

2. What bonus activities did you do that I didn't think of? What time does your school day start and end?

3. If you did any of our websites for screen time, tell us which one you did!
