Poetry Sharing

Dear Readers,
We'd love to hear some poems you've created!  In the comments, share a poem you wrote.  Keep in mind some of the types of poetry we've studied:
  • Looking at things with a poet's eye, in unique or unusual ways
  • Acrostic (write each letter of the subject on a new line and come up with words to describe the subject)
  • Haiku (Nature poem, 3 lines:  5 syllables on the first line, 7 syllables on the second line, 5 syllables on the third line.)
  • Shape Poems (not easy to share on the blog, but you can bring in to school!)
  • Limerick (funny poem, follows the rhyming pattern AABBA).

I can't wait to hear some poetry!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Holliday

Virtual Reality Field Trip of Factories

4/30/2018

Dear Readers,
Last week we took a field trip--a virtual field trip to a car factory and a chocolate factory! We used virtual reality (VR) headsets to learn about assembly lines and the production of goods!  It was awesome! Mrs. Nocks, our librarian, has a lot of experience leading virtual reality tours, so she helped us with our tour too. We saw how cars are made from rolls of steel to the finished product.  We even got to go inside a car while it was on the assembly line.  It was neat to see all the robots hard at work, especially after reading The Wild Robot for our last read aloud and loving the main character, Roz!  We had to turn our heads slowly and stay seated during the tour so that we wouldn't get hurt or sick to our stomachs.  It really felt like we were in the factories!
This field trip was fun because it helped us understand how assembly lines run and make work easier and quicker--more efficient.  It is also helpful because we just opened Holliday Factory in our classroom to begin production on our own goods to sell at our Cowboy Market next week!  We are using assembly lines and teamwork to create our products.  We are making goods or providing services to sell to Mrs. Stewart's class, and they are doing the same for us.  We are excited to be producers and consumers!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Holliday's Class

Questions:

1.  What good or service is your group providing at our Cowboy Market next week?

2.  What is each team member's job to help create goods?  Are you working as an assembly line, where each person is responsible for one part of production?

3.  What would be a good price to sell your goods or services?  How did you decide what the price should be?

4.  What was your favorite part of our VR field trip?  If you could take a VR field trip anywhere, what would you like to explore?

Reader's Theater

Dear Readers,
We are doing an activity called Reader's Theater.  The way we do it is we have a script in a book, and kids have parts called roles.  They take turns reading their parts.  Sometimes our teacher has to be a part because we don't have enough kids to be all the parts, or someone is absent.  Here are all of the plays:  Farflings from Farflung, Welcome to Water World, Jack and the Beanstalk Trial, and Wizard of Wherever.  You can do it at home if you have a book with people or animals that talk.  You just find what you want to be and read your part.  We performed them for our class on April 20, 2018.  We had fun doing Reader's Theater!

Sincerely,
Ella and Sami

Questions:

1.  Which plays have you acted in, and which character were you in the play?

2.  If you have ever been in the audience of a play, which plays have you seen?

Dear Readers,
We are having an ABC Countdown to Summer in our class! We have a calendar with one letter of the alphabet on each day and we do something special that starts with that letter.  Every day, we have something extra.  C Day is Crazy Sock Day.  You wear crazy socks. On H Day you wear hats.  Another is Popcorn Day.  You have popcorn for snack.  Another is called Quiet Day.  You have to be quiet (NO talking) for the morning.  Even Mrs. Holliday can't talk!!  Another is Nickname Day.  You  have to call people by a nickname they chose.  Another is called So Long Homework Day!  There is no more homework for the rest of the school year!  Finally, one is called Lollipop Day.  You get lollipops!  Today is the first day.  It is A Day which is Addition Day!  We can't wait for the end of the year!
From,
Leah, Nate, Paxton, and Sam

Force and Motion Fair by Paxton and Sam

Dear Readers,
We made a Force and Motion Fair.  Our class made games that use forces to make them work.  We came up with ideas for games.  Here are some of our ideas:  Plinko, Marble Tube, Whack-a-Mole, Magnet Toss, and Sling Shot.  We brought some things from home and used cardboard, tape, balls, cups, baskets, paper, scissors and duct tape to make our games.  We had fun making them.
We wrote directions for how to play the game. We also wrote how force and motion are involved in the game to make them work.
For the fair, we combined our games with the other Second Grade class and set them up in our Gym and Cafeteria.  We invited First Graders, parents, siblings and friends.  We even had our principal, Mrs. Hill, and 2 police officers come!  Our games were numbered 1-15.  All the visitors received a ticket.  When they played a game, we checked off the number of the game they played.  The Force and Motion Fair was really fun!

Sincerely,
Paxton and Sam

Questions:

1. What was your favorite game you've ever played at a fair or carnival?

2.  What force made that game work?  Think about pushes, pulls, twists, friction, gravity, or magnetic force.

3.  What games did you like to make or play as a kid?
