On Wednesday, we went to iSpace as a Second Grade field trip! It was mostly about STEAM learning, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. We played with Legos for our activities! Our morning activity was reading the book, Sheep in a Jeep, and building a jeep out of Legos with a partner. We rolled them down ramps onto different surfaces to see how far they would roll. We rolled them over a towel, wax paper, sand paper, and carpet. We made predictions of how far they would go before we tested. We had a notebook to record our results. We also made a bridge out of various materials to help the jeep get over a mud puddle so it wouldn't get stuck like it did in the book. Our third activity was rolling our jeep down a ramp with weighted blocks to see how adding weight would affect the length it rolled. We used 1, 2, and 3 weighted blocks. If we had time, we could switch to bigger tires to see how that changed how it rolled.
Our afternoon activity was building a robot called Milo. Milo was a robot that we could program to move around, using a tablet and writing code! First we read a story called How to Code a Sand Castle. Then we started building our robots with a partner. Finally, we started writing code to program the robot. We could change how fast it went, how long it rolled, and we could even change colors on his light, noises the tablet made, and backgrounds. We created stories about the robots using the backgrounds and noises on the tablet. We really had fun on the field trip at iSpace!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Holliday's Class
Questions:
1. If you have ever coded before, what have you coded?
2. Do you like Legos? Why or why not?
3. If you have ever been to iSpace, what did you do there, and did you like it?
