Second Grade Curriculum
Welcome to Second Grade at Vermont Primary School! The second grade curriculum is a developmentally appropriate program involving the children's physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth. Attention to each of these areas is important for children to enjoy and succeed in learning. The children will be engaged in a wide variety of learning activities so that they may learn according to their needs and interests.
LANGUAGE ARTS: A balanced literacy program will provide several kinds of reading and writing experiences. The children participate in activities such as reading aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading during Reading Workshop, in combination with shared writing, interactive writing, guided writing and independent writing in Writer's Workshop. Extension activities include journal writing, story dramatization, class books, and individually created books.
MATH: Second grade math will be taught using the EnVisions series. This standards-based curriculum presents mathematics context through connections within mathematics and to the areas of science and language arts. It is structured with problem-solving at its core so that concepts and skills grow logically within the grade. This "hands-on" math program helps children learn concepts such as pattern, number sense, geometry, and measurement. A variety of high interest materials are used to help children learn these concepts, including online access.
SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES and HEALTH: We study a wide variety of science and social studies topics, including TCI Social Studies and National Geographic for Science.
LEARNING STATIONS: Individualized learning and instruction take place during stations as well. Children work at literacy and math stations to extend and enrich the curriculum. During stations, your child will also engage in small group work, independent study, individualized instruction, working with parent volunteers, or peer group work.
