Zoo Outreach Program

2/15/2019

Dear Readers,

This week we had people from the local zoo visit us!  They brought four different animals to our classroom to teach us about the adaptations they have to help them survive in their habitats. An adaptation is a characteristic that an animal has to keep it safe or survive.  First, we met Olive, a ball python.  Ball pythons don't have noses, but they are able to smell with their tongues, which is split in two.  Then we met a colony of Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches.  These cockroaches are able to hiss to sound snakes to keep predators away.  The next animal we met was Sienna, a spotted turtle.  Turtles have hard shells to hide in and protect themselves.  Sienna had spots on her shell that look like pebbles to help her hide from predators too.  Finally we met Boccee (BAW-chee), an armadillo. Boccee is a type of armadillo that can curl up in a ball to protect from predators.  They eat insects, and she has claws to dig for her food.  It was fun learning about these animals and seeing them in person!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Holliday's Class

Questions:

1.  What is your favorite animal, and what adaptation does this animal have to survive in its habitat?

Dear class,
My favorite animal is a cheetah. It is very fast so it can catch prey and escape predators in the African plains. Cheetahs have spots to camouflage so it can catch prey easier.

Dear class,
My favorite animal is a pig! One adaptation my animal has is a snout. It helps them smell further. Next they have hairs. It helps them keep warm in the cold.

Dear Class,
My favorite animal is a hamster. It sees in black and white so they can just focus on moving things so they can hunt. I think they are cute.

Hi Henry-

I agree that hamsters are cute! My favorite animal is the elephant. I love how big and gentle they are. Elephants need a lot of space and plants to eat for their habitat.

I love the zoo and it is so fun you got to have a visit from them!

Dear Henry,
I love Hamsters too. They are so cute and fluffy and fuzzy. I want a pet hamster. You need a cage, and a bottle of water, some food ,a bed that is very comfy and cozy. You need lots of toys, and a ball that you put them in so they don"t get lost. There are so many colors of them like white and just black. Hamsters have lots of personalities.

Dear class,
My favorite animal is a lizard. Their habitat is a desert. To protect them, some of them have thorns on their body. That helps them because if a predator comes they stick it out and if the predator goes to the thorns it will hurt.

Hi Jaden!

I also like lizards. They have been on earth a long time because they know how to survive. Our bearded dragon zero is a great pet. He has defenses including his black puffy beard and teeth.

Fortunately, we don't get to see those because he stays happy. :-)

Thanks!

Daddy

Dear jaden's dad,
I love lizards. They are awesome because of how they can crawl. I can't believe that they can eat so fast. It eats one piece of huge lettuce and it's gone in one second.

Sincerely,
Jayden

Dear class,
I really liked the zoo outreach program. When my Mom was in school some people from the zoo came and they
brought a cheetah! My favorite animal is a bunny. A bunny's adaptations are they have big feet so they do not fall into the snow.

Sincerely,
Madalyn

Hey Madalyn!
I’m so happy you and your class had some close encounters with different animals through the zoo outreach program. It’s fortunate that your favorite animal is a bunny, since one lives with us now! Adaptations can be so unique: for example, I wonder if chincillas’ adaptation of taking dust baths is because of very little water in the Andes mountains. I like giraffes’ long necks to help them reach vegetation that other animals cannot.
Keep learning and be well!

Dear class,
My most favorite animal is a Dolphin. It is a sea animal. It can jump very high. I see a bunch of dolphins in Florida when I visit. The adaptation is that it can jump very high. That helps when something is trying to attack them.

Dear Noah,
Dolphins are cool. You can not have a dolphin as a pet but you can swim with them and take care of them if they are hurt. I know people want dolphins but that's there home and you have to feed them fish. Dolphins are so cool!

Dear Class,
My second favorite animal is a dog. It has better hearing than us. It has better hearing because let's say a glass plate falls. Since the dogs have better hearing, they can quickly know glass fell so then they can get away.

Dear class,
My favorite animal is any kind of wolf. They live in the woods but you can see them at the zoo. They love meat like pig and deer and so much more! His or her wolf eyes help them see. Its home is called a den. A den is where they live. A wolf's legs help them run. I hope you can see a wolf at the zoo.

Addy

Dear class,

I really like porcupines, their habitat is in deserts, forests, and rocky outcrops. They eat leaves, fruit and springtime buds. A single porcupine can have over 30,000 quills! A porcupine is a herbivore.

Do you like porcupines?
Sincerely,

Ian

Dear class,
My favorite animal is a alligator. It's adaptations are biting, and camouflage on its back. What is your most favorite sea animal? Where does your most favorite animal live? What landscape does it live on? Mine can live in Florida. It will live around the water or in the water. You would see it in the water or around the water. Have you seen your most favorite animal in real life or not? I have. I see it in Florida. I visit every year and visit the beach and bike shop. Have you ever been to Florida? It is very nice.
