Dear Readers,
This week we interviewed some friends and family that are adults. We were interviewing them for a special project in Social Studies. We wanted to find out what life was like when they were kids and to find out about inventions and how life has changed since then.
We learned about a lot of different things, but there were some ideas that we heard over and over again. One thing we heard about a lot is a game children used to play called "Kick the Can." It was a game kids made up and played outside. We want to learn what this game is and how to play so we can try it out!
We also learned that children ALWAYS were outside from morning until dinner time. They would leave the house and not come back for hours, and often their parents didn't know where they were!
We also learned that there wasn't as much concern for safety. Children didn't wear bike helmets, cars didn't always have seat belts, and they played in the streets! Kids also went places by themselves, even riding a city bus downtown! They also did not lock their doors often!
Cars were not like they are today. Some of the fanciest features in our friends and family's cars were radios or windows that you had to crank up and down. Some of their cars didn't even have radios, air conditioning or heat!
We saw pictures of old rotary phones and the first cell phone that was so big it could not fit in your pocket. We also found out that people had to share "party lines" with their neighbors.
Many of our family members did not have computers. Instead they used typewriters.
We saw a record player and records, which were used to play music. There are grooves on the records that have the music on them, and a needle from the record player played the music.
Check out the slideshow below to see some of the artifacts that were shared with our class!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Holliday's Class

1. What other differences can you think of between an adult's childhood and our childhood today?
