Today we started our study of Maps! We discussed what a map was, as well as the different features of maps. We analyzed different maps and determined the good and not so good aspects of each map. Take a look! We liked this map because it had a key and a compass rose. It was not very detailed though. We liked that this map has a scale and a compass rose. This map doesn't have many words or details, and it doesn't have color. We don't think this is a very good map to use. We like the compass rose on this map. We think this map is easy to read. Some of us think it has too many words. It is nice because it includes all of North America. It's not good because it doesn't have a scale. We like this map because it has color. We wish it showed rivers. It does not have many words. This map wouldn't be helpful if we wanted to see Wyoming because it is not very detailed. We like this map because the continents and oceans are labeled. It also has a compass rose and a scale. We like the details on this map. It shows population, so it gives us extra information. It has a map key and a compass rose, which are helpful when reading it. It has labels on it as well. We didn't like how big this map was because it was hard to carry around. Here are some questions for you! Please leave us a comment!

I think maps are very interesting. I love looking at them to find new places that I want to visit. Jami has a cousin that lives in Florida and I used to show her how far her cousin had to travel to get to Cincinnati.

Hi, this is Isabella Cox's uncle Steve in Colorado. When Isabella was about a year and a half old, she came out to visit us, I bet she doesn't remember. As we drove around looking at the scenery, she loved to hold our handheld GPS that we called "The Map". It has a small color screen and the map moves as we move while driving or hiking. She would look out the window and then look at the map and watch it change. It was so funny. Now we have a baby of our own and she does the same thing!

Hi I'm Isabella's Mom. I work for a local government called the Village of Greenhills and we use maps daily. The maps we use contain a great level of detail about a very small area. Our maps show every street and property address in the Village of Greenhills. We use these maps for situations that arise such as a resident calling in to complain that a tree has fallen on her property. We immediately ask for an address and go to our map to gain visual information about where the tree has fallen and who might be affected. We can look at our maps and determine the shape and size of each resident's yard and where one person's yard stops and their neighbors begins. We depend on our maps and would not be able to do our jobs effectively without them. Good luck in your map studies! Maps are great tools.

You all did a nice job finding the differences in the maps and what is good and not good about each one. I use my digital map, the GPS, in my car a lot of the time. I would be LOST without it! :.)

My favorite kind of maps show a lot of detail for a very small area. I used this kind of map when I was in Boy Scouts and we went camping. It helped us to know where we were, what trail we should take to find our campsite, how far we had to go, and where to find a lake or stream to get water to drink.
