This week we had Everybody Counts! Everybody Counts is something that teaches us that everyone matters, no matter what our differences are. It teaches us about differences and how people live with those challenges. In Second Grade, we learned about people who are deaf or cannot hear well. We had parent volunteers come in to teach us. We read a story about people with hearing impairments, tried to read lips when we couldn't hear what they were saying, learned some signs like Happy Birthday to you, and guessed signs for different words. We had visitors from a school for children with hearing disabilities too! We asked them questions about how they live with their disability, and they taught us some sign language!
We learned that everybody matters and even if you have a disability, you can still do tons of things!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Holliday's Class
Questions
1. Do you know any sign language? Tell us a word that you can sign and how to do it!
2. There are many ways deaf people adapt when they aren't able to hear. For example, fire alarms have flashing lights since deaf people can't hear the alarm. Name another way they might adapt to the hearing world!
