In Science we learned about weather. First, we learned about the water cycle. The water cycle is a cycle that the water follows. First, it falls from the sky as PRECIPITATION. Then it EVAPORATES up to the sky as WATER VAPOR. The water vapor CONDENSES and returns to a liquid. Then the water drops form a cloud. When it gets too heavy, it begins to rain, and the cycle starts all over again!
We also learned about the sun's energy and how we can use it. We can use SOLAR PANELS to capture the sun's energy and turn it into electricity! We can power cars, cook food, and heat homes with this energy.
We have Science notebooks where we wrote Science vocabulary words and different experiments that we did. For instance, we did an experiment with two cups of water. We filled them both with water and covered one with plastic wrap. Then we put them in "sunlight" (artificial sunlight from a lamp because it was cloudy out). We found that the cup covered with plastic wrap didn't lose any water, but the uncovered cup did! This is because water evaporated, and it could escape the uncovered cup but not the covered cup.
We also learned about how to measure weather using weather tools. We used a rain gauge to measure the amount of rain, a wind sock to measure the amount of wind and its direction, and thermometer to measure the temperature outside. We didn't have much rain while we were at school unfortunately, but we were still able to make observations about the weather! One tool we did not use was an anemometer, which measures wind speed.
Finally, we learned about severe weather and how to be prepared and keep safe during severe weather. One thing we can do to be prepared is have a first aid kit and plenty of food and water stored in case you lose power. A radio with batteries is also helpful to have!
These are just some of the things we learned about weather!
Sincerely,
Lena and Mrs. Holliday's Class
Questions:
1. What else should we do to be prepared or to stay safe during severe weather?
2. What other tools do you know that can measure weather?
3. Tell us a fact about weather that we may not have learned in our weather unit!
